Joe Brubaker, Margo Margolis At Beth Urdang Gallery Sept. 7

avv/gs set 8/27 #710291

BOSTON, MASS. — “Margo Margolis: Recent Paintings” and “Joe Brubaker: Recent Sculpture” will be on view September 7–October 13 at Beth Urdang Gallery.

Margolis’ continuing commitment to abstraction is as fresh as it was in the early 1970s, when she began exhibiting with the Brooke Alexander Gallery in New York.

Employing ink and flashe on canvas, an exuberant “shorthand” of marks playfully roam over the surface, referencing Japanese animation and pop, occasionally accented by the artist’s characteristic geometric shapes of lozenges, discs and stripes.

Margolis lives in New York City and is chairman of the Department of Painting of Tyler University in Philadelphia. Her works are included in numerous public collections, including the Philadelphia Museum of Art, the Brooklyn Museum, Chase Manhattan Bank, Amerata-Hess Corporation, General Mills, Best Products, IBM, Estee Lauder, Miami-Dade College, Chemical Bank and Wellington Management.

In the gallery’s second exhibition of sculptures by Brubaker, busts of wood and metal, painted and lacquered, are featured.

Brubaker’s meticulous carvings in wood demonstrate a deftness; however their whimsy and spirit are reminiscent of the best American sculpture in the vein of folk art, African and Japanese woodcarvings, and Egyptian funeral effigy figures.

Brubaker has a devoted following and has been exhibiting in California and Washington for many years in both commercial galleries and museums.

The gallery is at 129 Newbury Street. For information, www.bethurdanggallery.com or 617-424-5550.
