Outraged About Pending Extension Eviction

To the Editor:

I am absolutely outraged by the pending eviction of the UConn Extension operation in Bethel. I could see if there was an understandable reason for taking such action. But to date, nothing has been shared with the public, yet it is the public who will suffer the most from this pending change.

I find the impact on 4-H particularly egregious. The mission of 4-H is to assist all youth ages 5-18 in acquiring knowledge, and developing leadership and life skills, all while forming attitudes that will enable them to become self-directing, productive and contributing members of their families and communities.

4-H in a nutshell helps our youth reach their full potential. According to research by Tufts University, 4-H youth are 25% more likely to contribute to their families, themselves and their communities, and 41% less likely to engage in risky/problem behavior.

What’s more important than ensuring the success of our young people, in addition to all the other contributions that Extension makes to the community? Do we really want to let that program and all the others suffer?

I would urge the residents of Fairfield County (which this operation serves) to sign the on-line petition to make their voices heard. There is no reason — good or bad — to make a change to this important community service.
