Before her dancers displayed what they learned this summer during a recital on Friday, July 31, The Little Dance Company owner Maureen Capalbo oversaw the dancers on Thursday, July 30, the final day of dance camp for the summer.

The Little Dance Company specializes in teaching young children how to dance. Ms Capalbo has been teaching dance for the past 16 years.

Ms Capalbo’s summer dance camp was held for one week and was offered to children ages 4½ to 8 at the Teen Center.

“Sleeping Beauty is the theme this week,” said Ms Capalbo. “Each session there’s a literary section, every day there’s a different version of the story, which teaches the kids how and that they can change the story.”

Ms Capalbo and Kerri Sommer, a teacher at Sandy Hook Elementary School who has also been teaching dance for 12 years, taught the campers two dance styles, ballet and lyrical, during the weeklong camp.

“The kids love it,” said Ms Sommer.

Both Ms Sommer and Ms Capalbo said that teaching dance is a labor of love. So does Molly Capalbo, the daughter of Ms Capalbo. Molly is a sophomore at Brookfield High School and helped to teach the dance camp.

“The camp is one week a summer,” said Ms Capalbo. “But I love it, it’s a labor of love.”
