Bank Robbery At Bank Of America
Police quickly apprehended a suspected bank robber mid-afternoon on Thursday, August 24, after receiving a call from the Bank of America at 6 Queen Street, informing them that a robbery had just occurred there.
At 2:38 pm, police received a call from the Bank of America's security department and also an Emergency 911 call from the bank alerting them of the situation.
Police quickly apprehended and arrested John McCarthy, 63, of 28 Bonnie Brae Drive, charging him with first-degree robbery, second-degree threatening, carrying a dangerous weapon, and fifth-degree larceny.
The 911 caller provided police with a description of the suspect, police said. Also, the caller explained that the suspect had given a teller a note stating that he had a gun and that he would kill everyone in the bank if police were notified of the incident.
The caller told police the man fled on foot toward Newtown Color Center, a paint store at 5 Queen Street, across the street from the bank.
Police dispatched multiple officers to the scene and quickly found McCarthy outdoors behind the paint store.Officer Felicia Figol detained McCarthy until other police arrived, according to police.
Police said McCarthy was found to be in possession of a large butcher knife and $833 stolen from the bank.
Police investigated the incident at the bank and confirmed that the money seized from McCarthy had been stolen from the bank. Based on photography Bank employees confirmed that McCarthy was the man who had taken the money, police said.
Police said that McCarthy was being held on Thursday evening on $100,000 bail for an arraignment on the four charges on August 25 in state Superior Court in Danbury.
