More than 1,300 players across 11 different leagues and eight travel teams participated in the Newtown Youth Basketball Association program during the 2006-07 season and things look like they will be pretty much the same for 2007-08.

The NYBA recently held its annual Tip-Off meeting at My Place Restaurant on Queen Street to begin planning for the new basketball season. The Board members met to review rules, league by-laws and scheduling for the upcoming season.

Last season concluded successfully in April with the annual All Star games for each of the in-house leagues, followed by Awards Banquets for each age group, and all was held in the Reed School Cafetorium. Participation medals were awarded to all, and several players were recognized for exemplary sportsmanship throughout the season.

The NYBA was made possible by the overwhelming support of our volunteers, which includes the NYBA board members, and over 200 coaches, assistant coaches and league directors.

If you are interested in getting involved with your kids and joining in the fun, contact the NYBA at  nyba-reg@prodigy.net. The Board of Directors meets in the Lower Meeting Room at the Town Hall on the fourth Monday of each month at 8 pm. All are welcome to attend.

In addition, the boys’ and girls’ travel programs, grades 5 through 8, are looking for qualified coaches to coach the teams. Anyone interested in coaching travel should also contact NYBA at  nyba-reg@prodigy.net.
