Mervil L. Shifflett

World War II

Army Veteran

Mervil L. Shifflett, 85, died August 19. He was born in Virginia, but came to reside in Bridgeport at the age of 19. He married Norma E. Kilpatrick on March 23, 1943.

He was the father of Cheryl Lopato of Newtown. Mr Shifflett is also survived by three other daughters, Linda Pataky, Gloria Kozlov, and Nancy Larkin; seven grandchildren, John and Leanne Lopato, Chucky and Rebecca Pataky, and Melissa, Sarah, and R.J. Larkin; seven great-grandchildren, Adrian and Angelica Larkin, Kaylee and Leila Larkin, Benny Callahan, and Charlie and Tommy Pataky; a brother, Claude Shifflett; sisters, Charlotte Kilpatrick and Francis Blyth; numerous in-laws, cousins, nieces, nephews, and many great friends. His wife; a son, Robert Shifflett; three brothers, Nelson, Jack, and Robert Shifflett; and two sisters, Delores and Beverly Shifflett, predeceased him.

He worked and retired from Jenkin’s Valves after 47 years. Mr Shifflett served in the Army in World War II as a scout/sharpshooter and received the Purple Heart and Silver Star.

Mr Shifflett will be sadly missed by all.

There will be an open memorial service on Saturday, August 25, at Newtown Congregational Church, 14 West Street, at 11 am. Following the service, family and friends are invited to gather at the home of Cheryl Lopato, 10 Fern Lane, Newtown.
