Historic Newtown Congregation Invites Community To New Synagogue Opening

Congregation Adath Israel will celebrate the culmination of decades of effort when it opens its doors on September 7 for the first service in its newly constructed synagogue on Huntingtown Road. The public is invited to join the congregation in two events celebrating its historic roots, and its support from the Newtown community.

The celebration will begin Friday, September 7, at 6:30 pm, at Adath Israel’s historic synagogue building at 111 Huntingtown Road. Members of the congregation will remove the Torah scrolls from the original sanctuary, constructed in the early 1900s, and share the honor of parading them along Huntingtown Road to place them in the Ark at the new synagogue at 115 Huntingtown Road. Interested community members are invited to observe the Torah procession. A Family Evening Service will begin at 7:30 pm in the new synagogue, followed by postservice refreshments, compliments of Adath Israel.

On Saturday, September 8, Adath Israel invites the community to the formal dedication of its new synagogue, and the Nezvesky School for Hebrew Studies. The evening will honor both congregation and community members who contributed to the more than 15 years of planning, fundraising, and building to complete the synagogue. Local clergy, public officials, and community supporters will join the congregation in the dedication, beginning at 8 pm. A celebration buffet and music will follow, compliments of Adath Israel.

For further information about the opening, call Adath Israel at 426-5188 or visit CongAdathIsrael.org.
