JENKINS JOHNSON GALLERY PRESENTS LYNN GOLDSMITHâS âICONS OF ROCKâ
avv/gs set 10/4 #714756
SAN FRANCISCO, CALIF. â Jenkins Johnson Gallery presents âIcons of Rock and the Imagination,â a solo exhibition of Lynn Goldsmithâs oeuvre of rock and roll photography as well as her fine art work, on view through October 30.
Goldsmithâs first blush from rock photography was an image of The Beatlesâ feet. She opted to capture only this portion of the Fab Four, but it was enough to propel her career into motion and place her in the hub of the music industry ever since.
She has exhibited extensively at the International Center for Photography and the Museum of Modern Art, both in New York, and the Newark Museum of Art in New Jersey, among others; her work is included in the permanent collection of the Smithsonian, Polaroid, as well as the MoMA in New York.
Goldsmithâs vision was informed by her experience growing up in Detroit during the heyday of Motown. It was an era in which concertgoers dressed to the nines to listen to their favorite musicians live: see and be seen. When Goldsmith arrived as a photographer in the late 60s, musicians favored a âcome as you wereâ methodology to their appearance. Goldsmith was not satisfied with their haphazard appearance and began shaping their styles for portrait sessions. Hair, makeup and clothes were stylized to realize the rockersâ full potential in their session.
In her current body of personal work, the series âIn the Looking Glass,â Goldsmithâs lens shifts from portraiture of rock icons to portraiture of herself. Inspiration came from observing crowds lingering and ambling pass the haute displays on New York City streets.
The gallery is at 464 Sutter Street. For information, www.jenkinsjohnsongallery.com or 415-677-0770.
