KNOEDLER & COMPANY PRESENTS MICHAEL GOLDBERG PAINTINGS

avv/gs set 9/10 #711734

NEW YORK CITY — “Michael Goldberg: New Paintings” is on view through November 3 at Knoedler & Company. The gallery announces its representation of Michael Goldberg with this inaugural exhibition of work created in 2006 and 2007.

The paintings in this exhibition form a series named for ancient Greek archaeological sites, a unifying theme revealed in their architectural, monumental forms, in the richness of their “festive light,” in their emphasis on the ambiguities between structure and gesture, surface and space, as well as in evocative titles such as “Delphi,” “Paestum,” “Heraion of Argos” and “Knossos.”

In the interview for the exhibition catalog, “Michael Goldberg and John Yau: A Conversation,” the artist speaks of “gridding-out” the canvases, and the subsequent process of erasing — alternately “establishing and then disestablishing” — their structural geometry and linear demarcations.

One of the second-generation New York School painters, Goldberg is often associated with the group of artists who “represented the anti-lyrical side of gesture paintings” — including Norman Bluhm, Grace Hartigan, Al Held, Alfred Leslie, and Joan Mitchell. He participated in the historic 1951 Ninth Street Show and joined the Artists’ Club in 1952.

Today the artist divides his time between his studios in New York City and Spannocchia, Tuscany. He exhibits widely both in the United States and Europe, and in June of this year had a show at Galleria Peccolo in Livorno, Italy.

The gallery is at 19 East 70th Street. For information, www.knoedlergallery.com or 212-794-0550.
