Newtown High School Fall Sports Tryouts
All students who will try out for a sports team at Newtown High School must bring the following items on the first day of practice (no student will be allowed to try out without a physical form and a parent permission form):
*Physical Form: A physical is good for 13 months from the time that it was signed by the doctor. These yellow forms are located in the NHS nurseâs office, the main office and on Nighthawksports.com. No other form will be accepted.
*Parent Permission Form: A parent permission form must be filled out and signed by a parent and the student for each new sports season. These forms are located on the back of the yellow physical form.
*Pay-To-Participate Fee: The fee will be collected once the final teams have been selected. These fees are nonrefundable once a student-athlete is selected for a team. All checks should be made out to Newtown High School. Fees by sport are as follows: Football, $100; Cheerleading, $50; Cross Country, $50; Field Hockey, $100; Volleyball, $100; Soccer, $100; Girlsâ Swimming, $100
Students are asked to bring water to all tryouts. Tryout dates are as follows:
*Volleyball: Saturday, August 23. Freshmen, 8 to 9:30 am; Sophomores, 9:30 to 11 am; Juniors and Seniors, 11:30 am to 1:30 pm, and 2:30 to 3:30 pm, in the NHS main gym. Bring sneakers, towels, and knee pads.
*Girlsâ Swimming: Saturday, August 23, 8 to 11 am. All interested swimmers should report to the NHS pool. All swimmers must be able to swim 1,000 continuous yards with flip turns and should arrive prepared to do so that morning.
*Boysâ Soccer: Saturday, August 23. All interested players should report to the NHS practice field behind the school. The first session will run from 8 to 11 am and the second session will run from 3 to 6 pm.
*Girlsâ Soccer: Saturday, August 23. All interested players should report to the practice field behind the school with soccer gear and running shoes. Sessions for all prospective players will be 8 to 10 am., 1 to 3 pm, and 6 to 8 pm.
*Girlsâ Cross Country: Monday, August 25. Runners should report to the NHS track at 2:15 pm and be prepared to run.
*Boysâ Cross Country: Saturday, August 23. Runners should report to the NHS track at 11 am and be prepared to run.
*Field Hockey: Saturday, August 23. Tryouts will be from 8 to 10 am (report to the track) and 4 to 7 pm (report to the practice field). All players should bring sneakers, cleats, mouth guard, shin guards, and eye protection.
*Football: A summer conditioning program will take place at Newtown High School. Please e-mail Coach Steve George (georges@newtown.k12.ct.us) as soon as possible for more information about this program and tryouts.
Note: Year-end grades determine academic eligibility. A student is deemed academically eligible if he or she has no more than one failing grade and an overall average of 70 percent or higher.
All freshmen are deemed academically eligible.
