NAMI Hosting Education Program, Speaker Series

FAIRFIELD — NAMI Fairfield will begin its Family to Family Education Program specifically for family members of persons diagnosed with serious mental illness on Monday, September 15. This free 12-week course will be held in the Eliot Room, First Church Congregational every Monday from 7 to 9:30 pm.

The course will cover information about schizophrenia, bipolar disorder, major depression, panic disorder, obsessive-compulsive disorder, and other serious mental illnesses. It will also teach coping skills such as handling crisis and relapse, listening and communication skills, and self-care around worry and stress.

The series will also provide basic information about medications as well as recovery and rehabilitation.

Family to Family will be run by family members who have experience living with a loved one with mental illness. Class size is limited, so preregistration is required. For more information or to register call 426-7153.

In other NAMI news, the Fairfield chapter’s First Wednesday of the Month September Speaker Meeting will feature Michael Horgan and Bill Evarts from Search for Change. Mr Evarts is the program director at the Norwalk office and Mr Horgan is a vocational counselor who specializes in computer training.

Mr Horgan is also an IOOV (In Our Own Voice) certified speaker.

Search for Change is a psychiatric rehabilitation agency providing residential and vocational services to adults recovering from mental illness. The program teaches the skills needed to choose, obtain, and maintain desirable housing, meaningful employment, higher education, and productive relationships with family and friends.

The meeting is in the Eliot Room, First Church Congregational, 148 Beach Road, from 7:30 to 9 pm. It is free of charge and open to all.

NAMI is the National Alliance on Mental Illness. Its goals are to support those living with mental illness and their loved ones, to provide educational programs to the community that foster understanding and healthy living, and to provide advocacy.
