Bertram Stroock Memorial Tourney

Registration deadline for the Newtown Tennis Association’s Bertram Stroock Memorial Tournament, Newtown’s own tennis tourney, is August 22. The entry form, available at www.ntaweb.com, must be mailed with payment ($10 for one event, $15 for two and $20 for three) to the Newtown Tennis Association, PO Box 3432, Newtown, CT 06470.

Players will arrange their own matches leading up to semifinal and final round matches which will take place at scheduled times on September 6 and 7 at Dickinson Park. All participants must be Newtown residents. Match categories are as follows: Women’s singles and doubles; men’s singles, 55 singles and doubles; and mixed doubles.

If entries are sufficient, there will be a consolation tourney for those who lose their first matches. Drawsheets and tournament guidelines will be sent to participants. For information, call tournament director Hugh Lavery at 426-2740.

Victor Coopersmith Cup

The Newtown Tennis Association’s Junior Championships, The Victor Coopersmith Cup, sponsored by the Richard Coopersmith Family, is open to all Newtown girls and boys in the following age groups as of August 22: 10-and-under; 14-and-under; and 18-and-under. Round robin matches will be played at Dickinson Park as follows: 10-and-under: August 22 at 2 pm; 14-and-under: August 25 at 2 pm; and 18-and-under: August 26 at 2 pm. The two highest-ranked players in the round robin for each group will play in a final round match on September 7. Players will be advised of the match schedule and in case of rain, play will be moved indoors.
