‘WARHOL’S MUNCHS’ AT 1018 ART SEPT 7

avv/gs set 8/22 #709908

NEW YORK CITY — The exhibition “Warhol’s Munchs” is on view at 1018 Art, September 7–November 3. An opening reception will be September 6, from 6 to 8 pm.

Completed in 1984 and drawn from Edvard Munch’s most noted paintings and related graphic works, Warhol’s “After Munch” series comprises three main images, “The Scream,” “Eva Mudocci” and “Self-Portrait with Skeletal Arm and Madonna.”

Five silkscreen paintings were executed of each tile, totaling 15 paintings that are part of a large body of work, including an edition of prints and drawings. This exhibition marks the first time a selection of works from this series will be formally shown together.

The “After Munch” series addresses Warhol’s use and appropriation of works central to the canon of Western art and underscores the artist’s career-long preoccupation with cultural icons drawn from throughout the history of art from da Vinci and de Chirico to Picasso.

Warhol’s artistic career took off in the early 1960s with works such as “Campbell’s Soup Can,” “Marilyn,” “Elvis” and the “Coca Cola” series. In 1963, he created his first painting based on another artists’ work, “Mona Lisa Thirty Are Better Than One,” but he would wait until the 1980s before further exploiting the use of icons originally created by other artists.

The exhibition will be accompanied by a catalog. The gallery is at 1018 Madison Avenue, third floor. For information, 212-537-0453.
