SVA ANNOUNCES FALL ART LECTURE SERIES

avv/gs set 8/22 #710011

NEW YORK CITY — From September 4 to December 11, School of Visual Arts will present “Art in the First Person,” a series of public lectures with artists, critics and curators on current issues in the visual arts. Speakers will include artists Roxy Paine and Dana Schutz, and Art in America contributing editor Carter Ratcliff. Admission is free.

David Humphrey will speak Tuesday, September 4, at 6:30 pm, 141 West 21st Street, Room 101. Humphrey makes lighthearted paintings with serious intentions; his seemingly offhanded renderings of clowns, kittens and the like take vernacular imagery beyond kitsch.

The SVA Distinguished Alumnus Lecture will feature Patrick McDonnell (BFA 1978 Media Arts) Thursday, September 27, at 7 pm, Amphitheater, 209 East 23rd Street. The creator of the Mutts comic strip, which now appears in more than 700 newspapers in 20 countries, talks about a life in cartooning.

Ann McCoy will give a lecture Tuesday, October 2, at 7 pm, Amphitheater. In a career spanning three decades, McCoy, a recipient of the prestigious Rome Prize for painting, has steadfastly plumbed various cultural traditions — alchemy, American Indian art and Jungian psychology — in pursuit of archetypal imagery.

In “Carter Ratcliff: The Point of Art” on Tuesday, October 9, at 7 pm, Amphitheater, author and Art in America contributing editor Carter Ratcliff considers art as a means for preserving and improving civil society.

“Universal Studios: Tracking the Art School in a Globalized World” will take place Tuesday, October 30, at 7 pm, Amphitheater. Discussing art education in the era of globalization will be Suzanne Anker, chair, BFA Fine Arts Department, SVA; Michael Archer, Ruskin School of Art, Oxford University, UK; Shelley Rice, Department of Fine Arts, New York University; and Miriam van Rijsingen, Department of Art History, University of Amsterdam, the Netherlands.

Roxy Paine will speak Tuesday, November 6, at 6:30 pm, 141 West 21st Street. Paine came to prominence in the late 1990s with automated machines that produced biomorphic paintings and sculptures. The New York-based conceptual artist has a recent installation of stainless steel tree sculptures at Madison Square Park.

Dominic McGill will present a lecture Thursday, November 8, at 7 pm, Amphitheater. English-born, McGill channels his experience in the British special effects industry to create drawings and sculptures dealing with such hot-button issues as religion, race relations and nuclear armament.

“This is DIY: Do It Yourself,” a panel discussion, will take place Thursday, November 15, at pm, Amphitheater. YouTube and Flickr are just two of the latest incarnations of the do it yourself ethic, which has shaken up markets and created new communities. Arts and publishing leaders weigh in.

The series will conclude with Dana Schutz on Tuesday, December 4, at 6:30 pm, 141 West 21st Street; and Johanna Drucker on Tuesday, December 11, at 7 pm, Amphitheater.
