JOHN PENCE PRESENTS NICHOLAS M. RAYNOLDS AND STEVEN J. LEVIN w/1 cut

wd/lsb set 8/22 #710098

SAN FRANCISCO, CALIF. — John Pence Gallery will present exhibitions of recent oil paintings and drawings by Nicholas M. Raynolds and recent oil paintings by Steven J. Levin. The gallery will host an opening reception for the artists on September 7, from 6 to 8 pm. The exhibitions will continue through October 6.

Raynolds has developed a studious, yet unique approach to painting a wide array of subject matter while employing a variety of techniques. He effortlessly interchanges academic, tightly rendered still lifes with earthy, organic botanicals and subtly executed interiors bathed in warm light. This recent body of work consists of more than 20 drawers and paintings. With subjects ranging from still life to figures and landscapes, Raynolds wows the view with canvases bursting with a seemingly limitless palette. Through his exploration of themes such as scrolls, books and well-traveled trunks, a sophisticated and personal iconography is developing.

Raynolds began his formal studies at the age of 15 at the Emily Carr College of Art and Design in Vancouver, Canada, where he received his BFA. He continued his studies in Düsseldorf, Germany, Nova Scotia College of Art and Design in Halifax and the Academy of Realist Art in Seattle, Wash.

In further pursuit of the mastery of his craft, Raynolds moved to New York City to study with Jacob Collins at the Water Street Atelier and at Studio 126 with Michael Grimaldi. Adding to his set of credentials, Raynolds was chosen to become an integral member of Jeff Koon’s studio staff. Raynolds’ work hangs in many collections and has appeared in a number of art publications. Recent achievements including illustrating the cover of the John Updike novel See My Face.

Levin is often regarded as one of the top classic American realists working today. A veteran presenter with the gallery, this show marks his seventh show in the 12 years he has been included in its stable. He has been involved in a myriad of group theme shows and become one of the most popular artists in the gallery. His works have been sold to clients throughout the United States, Canada and England.

Using soft, rich, harmonious colors, Levin’s paintings masterfully capture a casual, yet poignant sense of contemporary Americana not seen in the art world since Edward Hopper. Levin stands with very few others in one of the most complicated and admired genres — the interactive group scene. Alongside masters such as Manet, Degas and Ingres — and more modern masters, such as Eakins and John Koch — Levin has come forward with sophisticated compositions with figures populating scenes in museums, restaurants, at parties and also his studio. In addition, Levin’s exhibition will include still lifes, florals and portraits.

The gallery is near Union Square. For information, www.johnpence.com or 415-441-1138.
