They may have laughingly tagged themselves as woozers for being in the ‘second’ division, but Walker Industrials sure played like champions in the Newtown Women’s Slo-Pitch Softball ‘B’ League final last Wednesday night at Treadwell Park.

Walker banged out 22 hits and coasted to a 19-3 win over 707 On Main. Lynn Kovack, Rose DeSimone and Stacy O’Donnell collected three hits apiece while Maira Ross, Paula Newberry, Marsha Moskowitz and Tammy Brown collected two hits apiece.

With offense like that, Walker took charge of the game rather quickly.

In the bottom of the first, Walker scored seven times to take a 7-0 lead. Kovack reached on an error to lead off the frame, but singles by DeSimone, Ross, Jess Fonovic, O’Donnell, Marekn Mastrontoni and Moskowitz and a double by Sue Liss fueled the explosion.

707 On Main scored once in the top of the second thanks to singles by Trish McCusker, Lisa Hintzen and Sandy Black, but Walker scored three more times in the bottom of the frame to take a 10-1 lead. Brown led off with a single, advanced on a single by Kovack, and scored on a single by DeSimone. Kovack and DeSimone scored on a double by Ross.

707 On Main notched another run in the top of the third when Lauren McCusker – who banged a one-out single – scored on an error off a fly ball by Teresa Papalia. But Walker continued to stay well out in front, scoring once more on a double by O’Donnell and single by Newberry.

A one-out single by Sue Gouveia scored Sandy Black in the top of the fourth, inching 707 On Main closer, but singles by Kovack, DeSimone and Sharon Vetrano – and an error off a fly ball by Liss – led to two more Walker runs in the bottom of the frame.

While 707 On Main was done scoring for the night, Walker kept at it. Two runs in the bottom of the fifth and four more in the bottom of the sixth finished it off. Walker was aided by four errors, but O’Donnell helped do a lot of damage with a two-run homer in the sixth.

All 12 players scored at least one run, had at least one hit, and drove in at least one run.

For 707 On Main, Gouveia, Beth, Trish McCusker and Black had two hits apiece to fuel a 12-hit attack. Lauren McCusker, Hintzen and Black scored the runs while Gouveia, Hintzen and Black had the RBIs.
