Tennis Tournaments Are On Tap

The Newtown Tennis Association’s Junior Championships — the Victor Coopersmith Cup — and Bertram Stroock Memorial Tournaments are right around the corner. Details are as follows (entry forms are available at ntaweb.com):

Junior Championships

The Junior Championships, sponsored by the Richard Coopersmith Family, are open to Newtown girls and boys in the following age groups (as of August 24): 10-and-under, 14-and-under and 18-and-under. Signups are underway and entry forms should be filled out and mailed as soon as possible.

Round robin matches will be played at Dickinson Park as follows:

10-and-under, August 24, 2 pm.

14-and-under, August 25, 2 pm.

18-and-under, August 26, 2 pm.

Rain date is August 27.

The two highest ranked players from each age group will play a final round match on Sunday, September 13 at Dickinson. Players will be advised of the match schedule and, in case of rain, play will move indoors.

Participants must be Newtown residents and payment must accompany the entry form, available at ntaweb.com. Cost is $5 per event and participants may enter two events. For information, and to volunteer at the tourney, contact tournament director Hugh Lavery at 426-2740.

Bertram Stroock

Entries for the Newtown Tennis Association’s Bertram Stroock Memorial Tournament close on Monday, August 24.

Players will arrange their own matches leading up to scheduled semifinal and final rounds on September 12 and 13 at Dickinson Park.

The tournament is open to Newtown residents and a check must accompany the entry. Cost is $10 for one event, $15 for two and $20 for three.

Events include women’s singles and doubles, men’s singles, men’s 55 singles, men’s doubles and mixed doubles. For information, contact tournament director Hugh Lavery at 426-2740. visit ntaweb.com for forms and information.
