HUDSON, OHIO â Labor Day, September 3, marks the 26th annual Western Reserve Academy Antiques Festival. Founded in 1826, Western Reserve is the ninth oldest boarding school in the United States.
The festival is held outdoors, rain or shine, on Western Reserve Academyâs historic campus, which provides the backdrop for the exhibitorâs wares. More than 200 volunteers present the event, which will be showcasing 120 exhibitors from across Ohio and nine neighboring states. Offered for purchase is a wide variety of fine Americana, including period furniture, Ohio antiques, early toys, wicker, garden statuary, folk art, Oriental rugs, pewter and early Eighteenth and Nineteenth Century items.
The Antique Festival is sponsored by the Pioneer Women, a nonprofit organization comprised of mothers of academy students, past and present. As the major fundraising event for the Pioneer Women, the festival provides funding for special projects and activities for academy students as well as funding for the ongoing restorations of the campus, which is on the National Historic Register.
The Pioneer Women select a special antique for raffle each year. This year they have selected a hand-made Heriz Oriental rug from northwest Iran. It measures 8 feet 1 inch by 11 feet 11 inches, and is a wool pile rug on a cotton foundation. The design is a traditional large navy blue Heriz medallion in a strong, dark red and spandrels with some ivory, green and dark brown throughout the field and borders. Raffle tickets are $5 each or five for $20 and may be purchased at the Pioneer Women booth throughout the day.
More than 5,000 browsers and antique hunters attend the festival and ample free parking is provided. Preview tickets allow early shopping from 8:30 to 10 am, all-day admission and breakfast served on the patio of Ellsworth Hall. Preview tickets are $20 and are available at the entrance.
General admission is $8; children 18 and under are admitted free. The festival is open 10 am to 5 pm. The campus is north of Hudsonâs downtown on Route 91, North Main Street. For information, www.antiquesfestival.com or 330-656-4308.
