âDUNCAN HANNAH: WANDERLUSTâ TO OPEN AT JAMES GRAHAM & SONS SEPT. 7 w/1 cut
avv/gs set 8/21#709710
NEW YORK CITY â âDuncan Hannah: Wanderlust,â an exhibition of recent oil paintings, will be on view at James Graham & Sons September 7âOctober 6. An opening reception will be Thursday, September 6, from 6 to 8 pm. This is Hannahâs fourth solo exhibition with the gallery.
For the past three decades, Hannahâs subject matter has been England between the world wars. His work focuses on nostalgia and the human tendency to glorify the past and to project onto history an innocence that never existed. In his recent body of work, Hannah depicts vintage racing cars and boys playing cricket in Yorkshire as well as scantily clad starlets from the 1940s.
Ken Johnson, writing about Hannahâs work in The New York Times, said, âHannah makes paintings that look as if they were done at least 50 years ago by an English illustrator. Rather than looking only cleverly ironic, his painted images of English schoolchildren, ocean liners, majestic buildings and old movie scenes are, at their best, mysteriously evocative and sometimes even smolderingly erotic.â
Hannah was born in the United States in 1952 and lives in New York. He studied art at Bard College and the Parsons School of Design. For more than two decades he has been featured in more than 35 solo exhibitions throughout the United States and in London. Recent solo gallery exhibitions include Rebecca Ibel in Columbus and Rebecca Hossack in London.
