'We The People'
âWe The Peopleâ
To the Editor:
The First Amendment of the United States Constitution, in addition to granting freedom of speech, also guarantees freedom to petition and freedom to assemble.
Last Saturday, I used one of these freedoms when I signed a petition requesting that the voters of Newtown be permitted to vote in November on the Charter Revision Commissionâs recommended changes to the government of Newtown in its entirety. If this petition fails then only those changes agreeable to the Legislative Council will be on the ballot.
If you are a registered voter and believe that you should be permitted to vote yes or no on the total package and not just part of it, then I urge you to sign this petition. Our countryâs founders wisely chose to give each of us a great deal of responsibility. Letâs never ever forget that it all began and should continue with, âWe the People.â
