Sandy Hook’s Melissa Samoskevich has been named to the United States Women’s National U-22 Select Team, as announced by USA Hockey.

“It’s always an honor to represent the United States by doing something I love to do,” said Samoskevich, a freshman forward on the hockey team at Quinnipiac University in Hamden. “Training with all of the older girls this week really showed me what it really takes to make it to the top.”

The 22 members of the United States U-22 Select Team will face Canada in a three-game series in Lake Placid, New York from August 19 to 22 at the Lake Placid Olympic Center.

Samoskevich was named to the United States U-22 Select Team after training at the National Festival from August 11 to 16 in Lake Placid. Samoskevich, 18, is the youngest player named to the US Women’s National U-22 Select roster and is the only player on the team that did not play college hockey during the 2014-15 season, as she was a senior at Shattuck-St Mary’s.

Last year with Shattuck-St Mary’s, Samoskevich had 56 goals and 38 assists for 94 points in just 50 games with the Sabres. She was named the USA Today All-USA Girls’ Hockey Player of the Year.

Samoskevich has an extensive history with USA Hockey, most recently competing with the US Women’s National U-18 team at the IIHF U-18 Women’s World Championships in Buffalo, N.Y., in January. The United States won the gold medal and Samoskevich was named the top US player of the tournament. Samoskevich scored a tournament-high six goals and was tied for the second-most points with eight in five games played.
