Lillian Canfield McCarthy Ermisch
Newtown native Lillian Canfield McCarthy Ermisch, 94, daughter of Mr and Mrs George Glover Canfield, died June 27, at her son’s home in Inverness, Fla. She was born in Danbury Hospital, January 9, 1919, and was the twelfth generation of Newtown-founding Glovers.
She lived in Newtown until 1982, when she moved to Brookfield.
She graduated from Hawley High School and Booth and Bayliss Commercial School, Bridgeport, and worked as sales secretary at Fabric Fire Hose Company and at Bridgeport Brass until her marriage in 1948 to Walter J. McCarthy. Following his death, she was employed at Pelletier, Inc, for five years.
Mrs Ermisch was active in Girl Scouts and church work, and was clerk for 12 years for the Newtown Board of Education. She had many other interests and hobbies, including rug hooking and writing poetry.
In 1980 she married Leroy Ermisch, who died in 1987.
Three children, Sharon McCarthy Jones Lavoie, and her husband Mark, of West Brookfield, Vt., Walter J. McCarthy, and his wife Geri, of Inverness, and Marilyn L. McCarthy of Connecticut; a grandson and his wife, John C. and Sandi Jones of Webster, N.Y.; two great-grandsons; a brother, William G. Canfield of New Jersey; a cousin and his wife, Clifford C. and Marie Walker, and their family of Newtown; a niece and a nephew survive Mrs Ermisch.
At Mrs Ermisch’s request, there will be no services. Burial will be in St Rose Cemetery on Friday, September 20, at 11 am, with a memorial gathering.
