Crosswalk Violations Carry $181 Fines For Offending Drivers
In view of the September 1 opening of town schools for the 2010-11 school year, police plan heightened enforcement of crosswalk laws, which give pedestrians the right of way to cross streets, provided that pedestrians are standing in crosswalks.
Drivers are required to yield to pedestrians who are waiting in the entrance of a marked crosswalk.
The police departmentâs traffic enforcement unit will be monitoring local crosswalks for driversâ compliance with the law.
Motorists who violate the law may be issued a $181 infraction ticket, police said.
Police said they plan to conduct successive crosswalk enforcement patrols as the school year progresses.
