Knights Fight Way To Championship
The Newtown Knights, a 12 year old baseball team, captured the I-84 league championship with a come-from-behind 12-7 win over Danbury at Rogers Park in Danbury on July 31.
The Knights played with fire and passion as they fought through the season to win continuously en route to a 15-0 campaign.
Going into the championship round, Danbury had one loss and needed to beat the Knights twice to win the title.
Newtown trailed 1-0 and 5-1 before coming back to tied the game. Danbury pulled ahead 7-5 in the fifth, but Newtown batted around tin the top of the sixth inning for seven runs to take the lead and seize control.
Contributing to the two-out rally for Newtown with singles were Peter Clifford, Austin Kasbarian, Sean Fulton, Tucker Kistner, and Owen Samson. Brian Gallagher contributed to the rally by hitting a bases-clearing triple, and Danny Pearson also clearing the bases with a double to the middle of the fence.
Sean Ferris, Brandon Hensel, Peter Winans, Mike Liberante, Austin Leblanc, and Scott McLean also contributed with great discipline at the plate and excellent defensive plays in the field. The Knights got tremendous pitching from Danny Pearson and Brandon Hensel in the early part of the game. Kasbarian finished off the win by striking out two and forcing a batter to ground out in the last of the sixth.
