Newtown Summer Program Offers Something For Everyone

By Susan Coney

Newtown Summer Adventure Program sponsored by Education Connection ran a summer long activities camp that offered something for everyone. The camp, which ran from the end of June through the middle of August, took place at Sandy Hook Elementary School. The camp offered various themes and featured activities surrounding those themes.

This past week was Flight Week and the children learned how to make different types of paper airplanes and tried to figure out what type of construction made the planes fly better. The children discussed various types of air transportation and enjoyed listening to books about the Wright brothers as well as a fictional book, which turned out to be a favorite, entitled Catwings Returns by Ursula K. LeGuin.

Other camp themes explored throughout the summer revolved around the study of dinosaurs, animals, sports, and the carnival. The campers had the opportunity to go to Treadwell pool and went on a field trip to Lake Compounce. Veronica Webb, who will be a fourth grader at Sandy Hook this fall, has participated in the camp for the last two years. She said, “I like the camp. The teachers are really nice. We went to Lake Compounce and went on the rides. When we came back we got to make our own roller coaster out of cardboard for Carnival Week.”

Evone Osdranus, an assistant at the camp, said that the children enjoyed a wide variety of crafts and activities throughout the summer. “We made picture frames, rain sticks, stepping stones, and impressionistic masks. It is a good, safe program; the kids and parents feel comfortable having it at a familiar location. It offers something for everyone,” she said.
