More About Pigeons
To the Editor:
I just finished reading Dottie Evansâ article âRookie Homing Pigeon Makes Unscheduled Stop In Sandy Hook After Run-In With Hawk.â
It sounds like she did a pretty good job on her research into the hobby of pigeon fanciers. Although I would have to say I would side with the people involved with the hobby, as you can probably guess by my involvement with the National Pigeon Association, Inc. Love of nature runs deep in most of our members.
As a follow-up to your article, your readers may be interested in knowing that Walt Disney will be showing a new full-length animated film called Valiant. It opens August 19. You can get all the details from the Disney website. The official site is: www.valiantmovie.com. If you would like any additional information you can contact me at my office in Torrington (860-489-0455).
In addition to the racing aspect of pigeons, we have many fanciers in the state who breed pigeons for the show arena. A few years back we held a Grand National Show with over 6,000 fancy pigeons in it at the Hartford Civic Center. Our organization filled the Hartford Hilton for a week in the middle of January, so we do add something to the economy.
In closing, please take a moment to think about the service our birds have completed to the state, nation and abroad. The US military has used pigeons to save our boys during: WW I, WW II, Korea and even today in Iraq as special guards to detect chemical agents.
Thank you for taking the time to balance the facts.
Very truly yours,
