A Fantastic Club

To the Editor:

The Junior State of America (JSA) is a fantastic club at the high school for any 9th-12th grade students interested in current issues or politics. We practice somewhat informal (sometimes silly), but highly intelligent debate both at NHS and at annual conventions in Boston, Washington, D.C., and Stamford. Students may participate as little or as much as they want. The club and the national organization of which it is associated are almost exclusively student run.

It’s a great opportunity to explore issues rationally, discuss them respectfully, learn leadership skills, and meet some awesome people in the process. As school begins look for flyers announcing our first formal meeting. All are welcome.

As I take the time to welcome new members I’d also like to bid a fond farewell to our NHS/JSA 2005 graduates. You have amazed me with your knowledge and insight, your empathy and generosity, and your ability to at once question and respect convention and authority. All of these great qualities for our future leaders. Happy and industrious trails to you.
