The Society of Creative Arts of Newtown (SCAN) has a pair of special events approaching during the next few weeks.

First, the group will host Chris Ivers demonstrating painting in pastel on Wednesday, August 23, at 1:30 pm, in the lower level of Newtown Meeting House, 31 Main Street (at the flagpole).

The demonstration is open to the public, and admission is free.

Ivers earned a BFA in painting and two-dimensional design from Hartford Art School in 1973 and found work in the advertising field for the last 40 years. She has been creative director at numerous ad agencies and in 1986 broke off on her own to start her own company.

She works with artists in that cross-over world of fine art and digital photography to teach them how to better promote themselves.

After raising four daughters, Ivers returned to her passion: working in pastels and oils.

She is past president of CT Pastel Society, where she also holds Signature Artist Membership. Ivers is also a Master Pastelist of the Pastel Society of America, and is Elected Artist Member at Lyme Art Association, Allied Artists of America, Audubon Artists, and Academic Artists of America.

She was inducted into the IAPS Eminent Pastelists in 2022, and is also a member of numerous other arts organizations.

Ivers has paintings in private collections throughout New England and has won numerous awards including being one of eight finalists worldwide in two of the IAPS cover competitions; first in Pastels in the Richeson 75 Landscape Show; her paintings “Red on 5th” and “Salt” were chosen as two of Pastel Journal’s Top 100; she was awarded Best in Show at New Britain Museum of American Art, and received her Medal of Honor from Audubon Artists.

She has also been published in art magazines and journals around the world and was honored with the Art Spirit Foundation Silver Medal Award for Excellence in Pastel at the Salmagundi Club, NYC.

Reservations are not taken for SCAN programs but additional information may be available at SCANart.org.
