William B.    Grumbo

Avid Sports Fan

William B. Grumbo, 62, son of the late Ernest and Agnes (Gooselaw) Grumbo, died August 10 at St Mary’s Hospital, Waterbury, after a brief battle with cancer. He was born February 20, 1944, in Pembina, N.D.

Mr. Grumbo is survived by two daughters, Laura (Grumbo) Cooney of Sandy Hook, and Shelly Grumbo of Rahway, N.J.; and one grandson, Patrick J. Cooney. He is also survived by a brother, Charles Grumbo of Bismarck, N.D.; and three sisters, Alta Rondeau of Belcourt, N.D., Ann Kelder of Lisbon, N.D.; and Elizabeth Hauge of Riverside, Calif.; and many nieces and nephews. In addition to his parents, Mr Grumbo was predeceased by his brothers Cedric, Francis, and Elwood Grumbo.

Mr Grumbo attended local schools and graduated from Pembina High School in North Dakota. He made his home in Connecticut after he was discharged from the US Army, having spent most of his military career in Munich, Germany.

Mr Grumbo, known to his friends as “Willie the Indian,” and affectionately referred to by his brothers and sister as “Lumpy,” was an avid lifelong sports fan. He was especially proud of his high school football record and of having been recruited by the Brooklyn Dodgers baseball team in his youth. As an adult, he enjoyed playing softball for Danbury area teams. He also took great pride in his Native American heritage.

A graveside service was held on August 16 in the Veterans Section of Wooster Cemetery, Danbury. Hull Funeral Service of Danbury was in charge of the arrangements.
