Former Silvermine Director To Offer Oil Painting Demo On August 23
The Society of Creative Arts of Newtown (SCAN) will host Charles Ray of Redding for a free demonstration of painting in oil during the groupâs next meeting on Wednesday, August 23, at 1:30 pm.
His subject will be a landscape.
The demonstration will be in the lower meeting room at Newtown Meeting House, 31 Main Street (at the flagpole) in Newtown. The public is invited to attend. Admission is free.
Mr Rayâs current work focuses on images in nature painted primarily on site in the Northeast â landscapes of serene clouds, rolling shadowed hills or bodies of water. Themes include sunrises and sunsets.
He derives energy from the sunrise, and the idea of getting a whole new start every day. Prior to his shift to landscape, Mr Rayâs paintings were created in the studio and were mostly figurative or still life.
Charles Ray retired a few years ago as the director at Silvermine School of the Arts in New Canaan, a position he held since 1993. In addition he taught painting and drawing at Silvermine School for many years and is a Silvermine Guild Artist member.
Mr Ray graduated from the Hartford Art School and studied at the Yale School of Art. He has had numerous one-person shows and has been in group and museum shows throughout Connecticut, New York and neighboring states. In addition he has been commissioned for many corporate and private portraits.
