Dr William R Glass, a resident of Newtown, has been recognized by the U Thant Institute for his leadership in promoting global peace. Dr Glass was honored at the 2006 Ambassadorsâ Reception and Dinner where he was acknowledged for his âoutstanding personal and professional achievement, in particular the leadership role taken in creating a center of learning that will prepare young students to participate and thrive in an international environment.â Special note was made of Dr Glassâs work with the Western Connecticut Academy of International Studies and his service as the chair of the team developing the highly innovative instructional program.
The U Thant Institute was inaugurated at the United Nations Headquarters in New York by its founder and president, Daw Aye Aye Thant, to continue the vision and honor the accomplishments of her father, the third Secretary-General of the United Nations. The mission of the institute is to foster global peace by promoting the understanding and acceptance that âwe are citizens of One Worldâ as reflected in the values, ideals, and actions of U Thant.
His Excellency, Ambassador Maged Abdelaziz of Egypt stated during his keynote address that âthe kind of work that Dr Glass has been doing is critical if we are to ensure a future that reflects global harmony and peace.â Daw Aye Aye Thant also expressed her appreciation to Dr Glass for his âefforts to bring peace to this world.â
Dr Glass has worked for many years in promoting the concept of peace education. He has been honored as the Connecticut Educational Leader of the Year with special recognition for his work in ensuring that all children develop self respect, respect for others, and the ability to live and thrive in a global society.
Dr Glassâs work has been profiled in four books and in many educational journals. He has also been recognized as a Kappa Scholar at Columbia University for Academic Excellence where he graduated summa cum laude. He has received numerous awards and honors including an âInternational Advocate for Children Awardâ and a National Urban Alliance citation for âExemplary Performance as an Educational Leader.â
He is currently serving as the associate superintendent of schools in Danbury. Dr Glass and his family have been Newtown residents for 23 years.
