‘Will You Marry Me?’ Surprise Engagement Proposal At Edmond Town Hall
Edmond Town Hall typically shows films at its theater, but just outside its front doors on August 8 a surprise engagement proposal took place and unfolded like a scene from a romantic movie.
Brian Sjoblom, 25, of Bloomfield, and his now-fiancée, Lauren Harrison, 26, of West Hartford, met while attending class at the University of Connecticut.
Unbeknownst to either of them, they later discovered both had ties to Newtown and had actually lived in town at the same time before Brian’s family moved.
Wanting to incorporate their unifying past, Brian planned the big moment of the proposal to take place at one of the most iconic spots in town, Edmond Town Hall, and have the marquee outside read, “Will you marry me?”
Edmond Town Hall Operations Manager Sheila E. Torres said that in all her tenure they had not been requested to change the marquee for a proposal, but were glad to do so.
On the morning of the surprise proposal, Brian and Lauren grabbed food at the Newtown General Store on Main Street.
While they were occupied inside, Torres and Edmond Town Hall custodian Scott Carmignani switched out the Captain America movie sign with the custom one Brian requested.
When the couple exited the store, Brian casually mentioned that they should see what movie is playing next door at Edmond Town Hall.
As they strolled along the sidewalk, Brian told Lauren that she will want to take her mask off for what happens next. When she did and suddenly realized the marquee in front of her read “Will you marry me” a smile spread across her face.
Brian brought out the ring and the couple joyfully embraced before he slipped the ring onto her finger.
Through all the excitement, passersby on the sidewalk cheered and shouted out congratulations for the young couple, who could be seen beaming from ear to ear.
Lauren’s parents, Elizabeth and Tom Harrison, soon emerged from the Edmond Town Hall with a bouquet of flowers for their daughter and hugs were exchanged all around.
“The proposal was perfect and exactly how Brian wanted it to be! We are so happy and excited for Brian and Lauren,” Elizabeth said.
To cap off the momentous occasion, Elizabeth said the couple went to see Brian’s family to share the good news, and the following day both families had a small gathering together to celebrate the happy couple’s engagement.
