The afternoon heat on August 8 did not deter the young adults gathered on the front lawn of the C.H. Booth Library as they worked diligently to create individualized tie-dye masterpieces.

Participants sat on the grass, surrounded by their supplies, and learned how to make different tie-dye styles from Young Adult Librarian Abbey Lynch and library assistant Terry Tortora, who oversaw the project.

Each item had to first be rolled up and tied with rubber bands — which could be placed strategically or randomly, depending on the pattern desired — then soaked in water. Once the material was rung out of excess water, colored dye could be added.

Donned in a handmade tie-dye shirt at the event, Amelia Hufschmied, 13, wanted to create a similar design on the new shirt she was making and did a bullseye design with blue, red, green, and yellow dye.

Once the application of the dye was completed, the items were placed in separate plastic bags to let the colors soak into the material overnight. Since the items would have to be rinsed out before wearing, each participant was also given special instructions on how to best wash their tie-dye item when they were home.
