Thursday Men’s League

This past week’s winner was Pete Spanedda with 5 points, followed by Tim Rahr with 4.5. The previous week’s winners were both Tim Rahr and Tim Carr with 5.5 points each.

Net Club Championship

The net club championship this year had a few regulars missing but the field was fierce. Dennis Brestovansky led the field by one after day one, posting a 5 under 65. With most of the field within 4strokes it was still anybody’s match. Another solid day, however, left Brestovansky the champion as he shot a combined score of 135. David Prosia and Tim O’Connell tied for second with 136.

Men’s Club Championship

After the qualifier and first two rounds were completed, the field was dwindled down to four players. Top seed Steve Mais had his work cut out for him going against No. 4 seed and former club champ Chris Watson. The other two remaining were two seed Mike Johnson and 11 seed Mike Portnoy, who last week had taken down No. 3 seed Tom Bartram. Portnoy found himself down 3 to Johnson at the turn but climbed back to get the match to even through 15. A costly bogey on 16 left Portnoy down 1 with two to go, but there was still fight left in him. Portnoy made birdie on 17 to bring the match back to even. After a lip out for birdie on 18 from Portnoy left a tap in par, Johnson had a six footer to extend the match, which he jarred to force extra holes. Unable to get up and down on the 19th hole left Mike Johnson a tap-in par to advance to the finals over Mike Portnoy.

Mais and Watson had a similar match going, each taking the lead from the other. With Watson 2 up with two to play, the match seemed over but a costly three putt on 17 by Watson gave Mais hope to force extra holes. A par for Mais on 18 left Watson with two putts to advance, and he came through, setting up the finals with Johnson.

While the numbers looked as if the finals would be a runaway, the match was close. Watson himself four under thru 10 holes and 6 up on Johnson, but as he had done all tournament long, he grinded through every hole, pulling it back to within 4 after the first 18. Unfortunately for Johnson, Watson found his groove that day and continued to increase his lead, ultimately winning 7 and 6 to become this year’s champion.
