Music Majors In The Making:

Insights For Parents & Young Musicians

TRUMBULL — The Greater Bridgeport Youth Orchestras will present “Music Majors in the Making: Insights for Parents and Youth Musicians who are Auditioning for and Applying to Colleges and Conservatories” on Thursday, August 23, at St Stephen Church (lower level), 6948 Main Street in Trumbull.

The program will run from 7:20 until 8:45 pm.

GBYO alumnus Chelsea Steinberg (University of Massachusetts, Amherst, Class of 2016, Music Education with Cello Concentration) and her mom, Lisa Bernard Steinberg, owner of Lisa Bernard’s Word of Mouth, Inc., will offer parents and young musicians in their junior and senior years key insights and observations about the application and audition process for prospective music majors and conservatory students.

Chelsea was an applicant in the 2011-12 academic year. Lisa has been a veteran college admissions counselor for general college applicants since 1995, and a parent of non-music majors as well. Both were surprised by the numerous college-search, high-school prep, application, auditions and testing details, distinct and unique for a prospective music major.

They have organized their reflections and suggestions to make them available to others involved in the application process in the 2012-13 and 2013-14 academic years.

The women will open the informal workshop together to a combined audience of music teachers and instructors, parents and high-school musicians, and then split into two Q&A sessions.

Chelsea will offer her candid analysis of the prep, audition and testing “need-to-know” material for the applicants themselves. Lisa will take parents and instructors aside to share her assessment of the process from the perspective of a supportive parent with a pivotal set of responsibilities in this multi-faceted and stressful process.

Their goal is to have all those in support roles, as well as the applicants themselves, be prepared, confident and successful in selecting and being selected for their music program of choice.
