The state Department of Consumer Protection (DCP) has cited two local stores for allegedly selling alcohol to a minor during a series of alcohol sales compliance checks, which were held on Saturday, August 11.
DCP spokeswoman Claudette Carveth said that DCP personnel visited ten local package stores and grocery stores that sell beer to check that those establishments comply with state law prohibiting alcohol sales to people under age 21.
The DCP used a trained underage volunteer to attempt making illegal purchases.
The two local stores that failed the compliance check were: World of Wine and Spirits of Newtown at 71 South Main Street, and Stop & Shop at Sand Hill Plaza at 228 South Main Street, according to the DCP.
The two businesses were charged with selling alcohol to a minor and will be required to attend administrative hearings before the state Liquor Control Commission at which they may address the charges against them, according to the DCP.
Newtown police accompanied DCP staff on the alcohol sting operation.
