‘SILK AND MORE’ AT MINNEAPOLIS INSTITUTE

MINNEAPOLIS, MINN. — The Minneapolis Institute of Arts (MIA) presents the exhibition, “Silk and More: Central Asian Textiles,” on view through October 14.

A related exhibition to “Uzbek Embroidery in the Nomadic Tradition,” this exhibition provides an overview of nomadic textile aesthetics from Turkmenistan and Kyrgystan and Kazakhstan to Afghanistan, but focuses primarily on the textiles produced in urban areas, such as large suzanis and ikats.

Also referenced are Russian printed ikat imitations produced for the Central Asian market. The concurrent display of urban and rural pieces in these two exhibitions enhances understanding of the dynamic aesthetic sensibilities of this part of the world.
