Evening Moth And Insect Walk At Audubon Center
Evening Moth And Insect Walk At Audubon Center
SOUTHBURY â Connecticut naturalist and author John Himmelman will lead a late evening âMoth and Insect Walkâ Friday, August 24, from 9:30 to 11 pm, at the Audubon Center at Bent of the River.
âNighttime jewelsâ are the words Mr Himmelman uses to describe moths, his favorite obsession. Moths are beautiful and fascinating, but are not appreciated as much as their daytime cousins, the butterflies, probably because they are mostly active at night and simply overlooked, as well as have a reputation as pests.
Mr Himmelman will discuss the important role moths have in nature, their life cycles, and their behavior. Viewing moths from Mr Himmelmanâs perspective, participants will easily change their own perspective of moths as pests to moths as jewels.
Although Mr Himmelmanâs focus during the evening walk will be on moths, other nighttime insects that make their presence known will also be topics for discussion and observation.
The evening walk is a free program, but reservations are required. Space is limited so call 264-5098 as soon as possible to reserve a spot.
The Audubon Center at Bent of the River is at 185 East Flat Hill Road, off Route 172 in the South Britain section of Southbury.
The 700-acre wildlife sanctuary and nature education center owned and managed by the National Audubon Society, is home to many species of birds, mammals, butterflies and amphibians, as well as a rich diversity of tree and plant life. The grounds and more than 15 miles of trails are open to visitors seven days a week during daylight hours.
