More than a dozen girls and boys, with help from mom and dad, baited their hooks and cast their lines during a free catch and release fishing derby at Masonicare at Newtown's Keating Pond on the morning of August 12.

Although open to outside community members, the event is held as a way to give back to employees, who bring their children, as well as provide an opportunity for residents to see their grandchildren reel in fish.

"We have 10 to 20 kids drop their lure in and residents watch from up top. It's a nice way to relax and watch some kids fish," said Craig Dumont, director of dining services for Masonicare. "It's just a little something we do every year."

"It's a great opportunity for us to have the community come visit and get to know us. And it's great for the residents. They get to watch the kids fishing," added Elyse Dent, administrator for Masonicare.

The approximately two-hour event, which has been held five times, includes a barbecue with Morrison Community Living Chef Dale DeCarli flipping burgers and dogs, and an awards ceremony for winners.

Landon Tellier won first place for two categories, pulling in both the first fish and the largest catch of the day - a 19 inch bass. Landon also had a big day overall by catching eight fish.

Alexander Kugler caught the most fish, with ten. Kellen Vollinger was a very close second with nine fish. Leah Laughlin got the Best Participant recognition and won a fishing pole for her efforts.

North Atlantic Sportsman in Monroe donated the fishing rod and provided discounted nightcrawler worms and hooks for the derby.
