To the Editor:

At this very moment, our way of life is being threatened by the creed that this country belongs only to those among us born with certain characteristics. Those who assembled in Charlottesville with their slogans of hatred, torches of intimidation, and weapons of violence are hoping that what happened there will be the beginning of a campaign to fragment our country along religious, racial, and ethnic lines. This is so against our ideals as a nation that people of good will must not remain silent.

Indeed, neighbors in communities across America have come together to speak out. This past Monday, with only three hours notice, more than 100 people assembled at Southbury Town Hall to support Charlottesville against this kind of divisiveness. History shows where this divisiveness can lead. It is born of hate and, thus, has no bounds. It is determined to trample our beliefs in equality and the rule of law. It will justify violence against "others." It will seek to destroy our compassion in order to normalize injustice.

We cannot allow this kind of hatred to fragment our world. Now is the time to oppose it. Please add your voice to the public conversation denouncing the racism, bigotry, and hatred that has once again reared its ugly head.
