SMART Camp Second Session Wraps Up

Although classes were out of session at Head O' Meadow Elementary School during July, the school was still full of children learning, having fun, and being creative.Shipwreck, shared the story of sisters who learn to work together after becoming shipwrecked on an island. It also featured the children singing and dancing to "We're All in this Together" from Disney's movie, High School Musical.

SMART (Summer Music and Art) Camp started its first of two sessions on July 5 and wrapped up its second session with a final Showcase of the Arts on July 29.

SMART Camp, run by Newtown Continuing Education, offers programs centered around music, art, and science for more than 80 children exiting kindergarten through sixth grade.

Some programs in the second session included STEM Explorers, Paper Maché, and Exploring Latin America Through Art.

The last day of the camp ended with parents welcomed for the Showcase of the Arts to view and collect their children's artwork. The parents and campers then watched a fashion show produced by the camp's fashion design program students and a musical created by the theater program.

Emily Anderson, one of the instructors of the theater program, said coming up with the musical is always a collaborative process between the instructors and the children and the show "went great."

"I think it was awesome," program coordinator Stephanie Schwartz said about the performance. "I'm thrilled we've had another successful year."

Director of Adult Continuing Education Elissa Gellis said SMART Camp runs in the family for some children, as their parents attended when they were children.

"SMART is the highlight of my summer," Ms. Gellis said. "It just gets better each time."
