Police Reports August 7 - 13, 2013
DUI Arrest
Police said that at about 11:45 pm on August 8, a 17-year-old boy was driving a Ford Escort auto in the parking lot at the Mobil gas station/convenience store at 62 Church Hill Road.
The boy then attempted to park the Ford, but collided with the front door of the business, police said.
Police responded to the scene to investigate and then charged the boy with driving under the influence, driving without a license, possession of less than four ounces of marijuana, and possession of drug paraphernalia.
The boy, whom police did not identify due to his age, was released on $200 bail for an upcoming court appearance.
Cellphone
Police report that while on patrol about 7:12 am on August 10, they spotted motorist James Blau, 44, of Fairfield using a handheld cellphone while driving eastward on Wasserman Way, so they stopped Blau to investigate.
Police said they charged Blau with illegal use of a handheld cellphone while driving and with driving with a suspended vehicle registration.
Blau was released on a written promise to appear in Danbury Superior Court on August 27.
Hattertown Road
Police report that while traveling northward on Hattertown Road, between its intersections with Abbott’s Hill Road and Merlin’s Lane at about 6:46 pm on August 11, motorist Vicki Boshka, 46, of Monroe, who was driving a 2013 Chrysler Town & Country minivan, encountered a deer that had run onto the road.
The deer and minivan collided. Boshka was not injured. Police took no enforcement.
Honda Off Road
Motorist Francis Scofield, 45, of Patterson, N.Y., was driving a 2013 Honda Accord sedan near 63 South Main Street at about 10:24 pm on August 9, when the vehicle went off the road and then struck four wooden guardposts, according to police.
Scofield was not injured. Police said they gave Scofield an infraction for making a restricted turn.
Washbrook Road
Motorist Nicholas Deselin, 17, of 4 Still Hill Road was driving a 2005 Volvo S-60 sedan southward near 19 Washbrook Road at about 10:30 pm on August 7, when he lost control of the auto and slid off the left side of the road, rolled up an embankment and then landed atop a large rock, according to police.
Deselin was not injured. Police said they issued him an infraction for traveling too fast for conditions.
Missed Turn
Police report that motorist Donald F. Peringer 19, of Danbury, who was driving a 2000 Audi A-4 sedan northward on South Main Street at about 9:30 pm on August 8, attempted to make a right turn onto Lovell’s Lane, but instead went off the right side of the road and then struck some small trees, with the Audi becoming stuck atop an embankment.
Peringer received a minor injury and was medically evaluated at the scene, police report. Police said they issued Peringer an infraction for making an improper right turn.
Pedestrian Accident
Police report that at about 4:06 pm on August 9, motorist Jillian Yuftczak, no age given, of Bethlehem was driving a 2004 Chevrolet Silverado pickup truck northward on Parmalee Hill Road, when she encountered four unidentified youths under age 18 playing on the Parmalee Hill Road overpass above Interstate 84.
One of the youths did not see the truck approaching and moved toward the center of the roadway, after which, “The passenger side of the Chevrolet then came into contact with the juvenile,” police said in a statement.
The youth was then transported to Danbury Hospital for treatment of injuries, police said.
Police did not provide the youth’s identity. Police did not provide more details. The incident is under investigation.
Berkshire Crash
Police said motorist Stephen Sommer, 61, of Brookfield was driving a 2006 Honda CRV SUV on Berkshire Road between its intersections with Jordan Hill Road and Great Quarter Road at about 8:12 pm on August 10, when a deer ran out onto the road and collided with the Honda.
The deer ran off before they arrived to investigate, police report. Sommer was not injured. Police took no enforcement.
Intersection Accident
Police said that at about 8:49 am on August 7, motorist Yueh Hua Teng, 62, of 55-A Butterfield Road, who was driving a 2005 Lexus RX-330 SUV, was waiting at a stop sign on Obtuse Road at its intersection with Currituck Road and Hawleyville Road, when the Lexus was struck from behind by a 2012 Chevrolet Traverse SUV driven by Melissa Liporace, 25, of Brookfield.
There were no injuries. Police said they gave Liporace a written warning for failure to drive a reasonable distance apart.
Interstate Crash
State police said that motorist Tyler Renkert, 47, of 6 Golden Pond Road was driving a 2013 BMW 335-I auto westward on Interstate 84, east of Exit 9, at about 3:48 pm on August 9. The BMW was traveling behind a westbound 2001 GMC Savana van driven by Edison Leon, 43, of Peekskill, N.Y., state police said.
A spare tire mounted on the undercarriage of the GMC fell onto the roadway and the tire then struck the front end of the BMW, state police said.
Renkert, two passengers in the BMW, and Leon all refused medical attention, state police said. Enforcement information was not available.
Highway Collision
State police report that at about 12:46 pm on August 7, trucker Stanley Howard, 63, of Aurora, Ohio, was driving a 2005 Peterbilt truck eastward on Interstate 84 in the center lane of three lanes, west of Exit 11, as motorist Sherrie Murry, 27, of Waterbury was driving a 2010 Mazda 3 auto in the right lane.
As the highway narrowed from three lanes to two lanes, the Mazda attempted to merge to the left, but collided with the Peterbilt, state police said
There were no injuries. State police said they issued Murry an infraction for a lane violation.
I-84 Accident
At about 4:20 pm on August 5, motorist Laura Goldstein, 43, of 32 Ridge Road was driving a 2012 Volkswagen Tiguan SUV eastward on Interstate 84 near Exit 9, as motorist William Greco, 50, of Naugatuck was driving a 2008 Honda Civic on the Exit 9 entrance ramp, according to state police.
In heavy traffic, the Volkswagen made a lane change and collided with the Honda, state police said. There were no injuries. State police said they gave Goldstein an infraction for a lane violation.
Sandy Hook DUI
Police said that on August 9, they responded to a report of a motor vehicle accident in a parking lot at 100 Church Hill Road in Sandy Hook Center.
Police said motorist April Santorella, 40, of 12 Overlook Knoll, who was driving a 2004 Ford Explorer SUV, had backed into a parked, unoccupied flatbed wrecker. There were no injuries.
After investigating, police charged Santorella with driving under the influence and unsafe backing. Santorella was released on $50 bail for an August 22 court appearance.
Rear-Ender
Motorist Melanie Raslan, 33, of 3 Dusty Lane, who was driving a 2006 Hyundai Tucson SUV eastward on Wasserman Way at about 6 pm on August 7, came to a stop at a red traffic signal at that road’s intersection with Berkshire Road, police said.
Eastbound motorist Kevin Echeverria, 48, of 4 Winton Farm Road, who was driving a 2008 Ford SUV, then struck the rear end of the Hyundai, police said.
There were no injuries. Echeverria received a written warning for following too closely, police said.
Three Charges
Police report that they stopped motorist Ryan Cunningham, 21, of 17 Dusty Lane about 10 pm on August 1 near the intersection of South Main Street and Elm Drive.
Police said they investigated and then charged Cunningham with a headlamp violation, driving under suspension, and possession of less than one-half ounce of marijuana.
Cunningham was released on a written promise to appear in court on August 15.
Sugar Street
Police said that motorist Antoine Babineau, Jr, 41, of New Britain was driving a 2012 Toyota Corolla sedan eastward on Sugar Street (Route 302), near its intersection with Boggs Hill Road, at about 4:50 pm on August 13, when he swerved in order to avoid colliding with an unidentified westbound vehicle that was traveling in the eastbound lane of Sugar Street.
In making the maneuver, the Toyota struck some guardcables, police said.
There were no injuries. Police took no enforcement.
Off The Road
Police report that at about 9:16 am on August 13, motorist Nicholas Swenson, 17, of 27 Turkey Roost Road, who was driving a 2001 Isuzu Trooper SUV, attempted to pull out from Elm Drive to enter South Main Street, but lost control of the vehicle on the wet pavement and landed in a roadside ditch.
Swenson was not injured. Police aid they verbally warned him for traveling unreasonably fast.
Hawleyville Collision
At about 12:01 pm on August 13, motorist Carolyn Schlichtig, 44, of Bethel, who was driving a 2002 Ford Explorer SUV westward near 173 Mt Pleasant Road, stopped for traffic conditions and was then struck from behind by westbound motorist Anthony Fossum, 47, of 14 Nelson Lane, who was driving a 2001 Honda Civic sedan, according to police.
There were no injuries. Police said they verbally warned Fossum for following too closely.
