Several weeks ago, a Newtown resident was strolling through the park next to the Mocha Coffeehouse. The split rail fence bordering the river broke as she leaned over to look at the water. She fell into the river and broke her spine. She is currently paralyzed from the waist down.

Two days later I went to the park expecting to find the area closed pending installation of a safer fence. The split rail was repaired but otherwise there was no evidence of the accident.

I called the building department and The Newtown Bee. I was told that the property is owned by Michael Porco but neither the town nor The Bee pursued the matter.

Am I alone in finding this a newsworthy event as well as cause for ensuring that a similar incident does not occur again? This park is a popular hangout as well as the site of the Sandy Hook Farmers’ Market. Maybe next time your child will be on the fence and into the river.
