Sabit V. Salon—

High-End Style In A Low-Key Atmosphere

By Nancy K. Crevier

With his dark hair slicked back and his tall, lanky frame, Sabit exudes the casual elegance that marks the atmosphere at his salon, Sabit V. Salon, located at 220 Main Street South in Southbury. “It’s a high-end salon,” said Sabit, who goes by just his first name, “and we give 150 percent to our customers, but in a low-key atmosphere.”

The family-oriented salon has been under Sabit’s management since November of 2007, but only formally was renamed Sabit V. Salon in March of this year. The 1,100-square-foot salon with eight stations is still undergoing renovations, with completion of the final touches scheduled by summer’s end. A redesigned waiting area, new ceilings with track lighting, new wooden floors, and new chairs are among the changes he has been implemented since taking ownership, all to give his customers a more pleasant experience.

His client list boasts customers from all across Connecticut, including Newtown, many of whom have been loyal customers of Sabit’s for years, he said. “I have customers from age 8 to 80, and I have customers who bring their children to see me now. I have some clients that I feel are family, because I’ve been doing their hair for years,” Sabit said.

Sabit has been in the salon business for nearly 15 years, since he was just 15 years old and attending Beauty Tech in Stamford. He has worked in Greenwich, New York City, and Westport, training with Vidal Sassoon and Bobby Brown as he fine-tuned his skills in hair cutting and coloring.

Opening his own salon was a matter of being in the right place at the right time, said Sabit, and being ready to have his own business. “I was working in Southbury, and one of my clients told me there was a salon for sale here,” he recalled. He decided to check into it, but accidentally walked into the wrong salon to inquire as to its sale. “It turned out the owner was contemplating selling, so it just worked out, and here I am,” he said.

The staff of five working with Sabit offers services that include consultations, cuts, coloring, highlighting, and makeup. “I always do a consultation with any new client,” said Sabit. “It’s important to know what they like and what they don’t like about their hair, the texture of the hair, and to just look at the client from head to toe to get an idea what they are looking for,” he explained. Then he helps the client look six to eight months down the road to where they would like their hairstyle to be.

“I like to tweak the style each time a customer comes in, too. That way, the client doesn’t get bored with the look and I don’t get bored,” said Sabit. “I love to cut hair, but I don’t want to get the reputation of being just a ‘cutter’ so I mix and match my skills,” he added.

Sabit V. Salon features Bed Head hair and makeup products. He likes the brand because it has products suitable for all ages and all types of hair. By fall, however, he hopes to introduce his own line of organic products made by a Colorado company. “I want something a little more clean and polished, a little more environmentally friendly, with no alcohol in the product,” he said. “It offers another option to my clients, too.”

Starting up a new business in a shaky economy is always chancy, but Sabit is perfectly happy, he said, with the response the salon has elicited. “Business has been wonderful. I’m really happy to be here.”

Sabit V. Salon is at 220 Main Street South in Southbury. Salon hours are Tuesday, 10 am to 3 pm; Wednesday, 9 am to 5 pm; Thursday, 9 am to 8 pm; Friday, 9 am to 6 pm; and Saturday, 9 am to 4 pm. The salon is closed Sunday and Monday. To schedule a consultation or hair appointment, call 264-0440.
