Rock Ridge Country Club held its premier event, the annual two day ABCD Tournament on Saturday and Sunday. Teams were formed by names being picked from a hat. This was an 80 percent of handicap net event, in which the four-man team needed two best balls on every hole to accumulate a team score. After 36 holes of competition, two teams were tied at 16 under par. The team of Frank Gavel, Jeff Fetchick, Mike Elliot and Cary Kortze was tied with Tom Meyer, Mike Portnoy, Art Weisgerber and Scott Usher. The team of Meyer, Portnoy, Weisgerber and Usher made a net birdie on the 180 yard par 3 18th hole to force a three-hole aggregate playoff. After the playoff, the team of Gavel, Fetchick, Elliot and Kortze claimed victory to decide a winner on Sunday. The teams played Rock Ridge’s par 4 10th hole, par 5 8th hole, and par 3 18th hole. With nine teams within four shots of the lead this turned out to be the tightest and most competitive field in the event’s history. Finishing in a tie for third place was the team of John Gschwind, Pete Spanedda, Rick Varnum and Bob Wilhelmy as well as the team of John DuBraski, Dean Harvey, Ron Molles and Jack Duffy posting a 15 under par score. Fourth place honors went to Art Fuller, Mike Fuori, Vin Palumbo and Eric Israel at 14 under par.
