DCP: Stop & Shop Tuna Salad Recalled

HARTFORD — Department of Consumer Protection Commissioner Jerry Farrell, Jr, urges consumers who have recently purchased Stop & Shop tuna salad sold in 12-ounce prepackaged containers and tuna salad sold at the service deli to discard any unused portions and bring their purchase receipts to their local Stop & Shop for a full refund. The tuna salad was voluntarily recalled on August 10 by the Stop & Shop Supermarket Companies because it has the potential to be contaminated with listeria monocytogenes.

Upon being notified of the recall by its supplier, Stop & Shop immediately removed all 12-ounce prepackaged containers of Stop & Shop tuna salad and the affected product from service deli cases in all of its stores.

“Consumers who have little tubs of the store brand’s tuna salad in their refrigerators at home need to know that it may be unsafe, and that it should be discarded immediately,” Cmmsr Farrell said. “While our agency can monitor the situation at the stores, consumers need to take precautions at home as well.”

The following products are affected by this recall:

*12-ounce prepackaged Stop & Shop tuna salad, UPC #0-688267-06663 — Sell-by-date: August 19, 2008

*Stop & Shop tuna salad (service deli), UPC #20880380000 — Sell-by-date(s): July 28, 2008 through August 19, 2008

Stop & Shop has received no reports of illnesses associated with consumption of this product.

Listeria monocytogenes is a bacteria that can cause flulike symptoms, like high fever, severe headache, neck stiffness, and nausea. Although healthy people rarely contract listeriosis, it can be very serious for those who are pregnant or those with weakened immune systems, such as infants, the elderly, and persons with HIV infection or undergoing chemotherapy.

Infected pregnant women may experience only a mild, flulike illness, but infections during pregnancy can lead to miscarriage or stillbirth.

Customers who have purchased the affected products should discard any unused portions and bring their purchase receipt to Stop & Shop for a full refund. The Stop & Shop Customer Service line is available at 800-767-7772 Monday through Friday from 9 am to 5 pm for more information.
