$50,000 Stolen In ATM Scam

ENFIELD (AP) –– A group of high-tech con artists skimmed more than $50,000 last month from dozens of Fleet Bank customers, police say.

The thieves used an electronic card reader installed over the one used to access the ATM room at a bank in Enfield, police said. That gave them account numbers, and they installed a camera inside the room to capture passwords, police said.

Deputy Chief Raymond Bouchard told the Journal Inquirer of Manchester that police have received nearly 40 complaints so far.

Using surveillance camera photos, police have identified three suspects –– all white men. Witnesses spotted nearby cars bearing New York license plates at about the time of the thefts.

Several unauthorized withdrawals were made in Pennsylvania, police said.

“We don’t know how many days this went on,” Chief Bouchard said.

Police contacted the FBI with details from the investigation. They are asking anyone who spots card readers that seem odd to contact police.
