Snapshot: Penny Mudgett
Occupation: I’m the assessor for the Town of Newtown. I started this position in January 2014. I’ve been here for 15 years, though. I was deputy assessor, and did data entry, before that.
Family: I’ve been married to Gary for almost seven years. We have no children. My father, Jim Talarino, lives here in Newtown.
Pets: I have two cats, Leah and Abby. Leah is a calico and Abby is totally black, even though they’re siblings. I got them as kittens, seven years ago.
How long have you lived here? I grew up in Newtown. Both my husband and I did, actually. We live in Woodbury now.
What do you like to do in your free time? I like shopping; I’m a coupon person! I like to take day trips, to places like New York City or Block Island. I like going to movies and getting together with friends.
What have you read most recently? My state statutes and the assessor’s manual!
Do you have a favorite travel destination? I like to go where it is warm, with blue water and white sand. My favorite is Mexico. We want to retire to an island one day.
What is the best thing about Newtown? The General Store. Growing up here, I’ve seen how it has changed throughout the years. Our office goes there for lunch, a lot. I go for the Popeye Chicken sandwich. Misty Vale is another place I love.
Who has been the greatest influence in your life? I would say my father. He’s always on the go. He made me the strong, independent woman I am today.
Did you have a favorite toy, growing up? My favorite toy was my bicycle. I was always biking around with my friends.
Do you have a guilty pleasure? I love Ferris Farm ice cream. Mint chocolate chip is my favorite.
