DUI Incident

Police report that they received numerous complaints regarding a motorist driving erratically on Interstate 84, who later got off I-84 at Exit 11 and was then seen driving erratically on local roads at about 10 pm on August 8.

Police said they found the motorist in question and stopped him on Mile Hill Road to investigate.

Police said they charged James Swain, 36, of Waterbury with driving under the influence, driving with a suspended license, making a restricted turn, misuse of marker plates, and failure to have automotive insurance.

Police initially held Swain on $5,000 bail, after which the state bail commissioner had Swain released from custody on August 9 on a written promise to appear on August 26 in Danbury Superior Court, police said.

Sideswiped Truck

State police report that trucker Peter Bentley, 47, of Bloomfield was driving a 2013 Freightliner PX-12 truck on westbound Interstate 84, near the Exit 11 interchange, at about 11:36 pm on August 8 when he was sideswiped by another unidentified vehicle that kept traveling after the collision.

Bentley was not injured. State police ask anyone with information on the incident to contact Trooper Nichols at the Troop A barracks in Southbury at 203-267-2200.

Hanover DUI

Police said they were called to investigate a one-vehicle accident that occurred about 7:13 pm on August 9 near 98 Hanover Road.

Police said that motorist John Burtsche, 52, of 11 Dinglebrook Lane had been driving a 1995 Ford Ranchero coupe-utility vehicle on Hanover Road, when the vehicle struck some objects alongside the road.

After investigating, police charged Burtsche with driving under the influence, making a restricted turn, and carrying a dangerous weapon (8-inch switchblade knife). He was released on $250 bail for an August 20 court appearance.

Probation Violation

Police report they went to 9 Dusty Lane about 8 am on August 5 to serve an arrest warrant against David M. Troccolla, Jr, 33 of that address.

Police report they charged Troccolla with violation of probation in connection with a past case.

After processing the arrest at the police station, police released Troccolla on $10,000 bail for an August 19 appearance at Danbury Superior Court.

Evading Responsibility

Police said they received a report about 7:45 pm on August 5 informing them that an unknown motorist driving a dark blue Mini Cooper auto pulled into a driveway at 32 Glen Road where an unoccupied 2011 Volkswagen GTI sedan was parked. The Mini Cooper struck the Volkswagen and then drove off, police said.

Police are investigating the incident and ask anyone who knows who was diving the Mini Cooper to contact Officer William Hull at the police station at 3 Main Street (Route 25), telephone 203-426-5841, or via e-mail at william.hull@newtown-ct.gov, in reference to case 2015-16978.

Multiple Charges

Police report that at about 1:36 am on August 7, motorist Karisma Aarons, 21, of 35 Button Shop Road, who was driving a 2001 Saturn L-200 sedan, struck a flower planter box at the Mobil gas station at 62 Church Hill Road, but then drove away from the scene.

Police said they found Aarons traveling near the intersection of Berkshire Road and Wasserman Way and they stopped her to investigate.

Police charged Aarons with evading responsibility, driving under suspension, driving an unregistered vehicle, failure to have automotive insurance, and possession of less than four ounces marijuana.

Police later charged Aaron on multiple warrants, lodging one count of failure to pay a fine or to plead not guilty to an infraction, and also with two counts of second-degree failure to appear in court.

Police said they held Aarons on bail for an appearance later that day in Danbury Superior Court.

Truck Vandalism

Police are investigating a vandalism incident that affected three tractor-trailer trucks that were parked in a parking lot at 40 South Main Street next to Amaral Motors Inc.

Police said that sometime between 8 pm on August 9, and 2:30 am on August 10, someone entered that parking lot and damaged the three trucks by spray painting offensive words on the vehicles, smashing their headlamps, and puncturing their tires.

The trucks are owned by Sysco Food Services of Connecticut of Rocky Hill, police said.

None of the other vehicles parked in the lot were vandalized, police said. Police ask anyone with knowledge of the vandalism incident to contact them at the police station at 3 Main Street, telephone 203 426-5841.

Alcohol Violation

Police said that while conducting an underage drinking enforcement project at about 7:19 pm on August 7 at the Plaza South retail center at 266 South Main Street in Botsford, they spotted a young male exiting the Cork ‘n’ Barrel package store there with some alcohol, so they investigated.

The male was determined to be 17 years old, police said. Also, they found that that he possessed false identification.

Police said they charged the boy with illegal possession of alcohol by a minor and also with misrepresentation of age to buy alcohol. The boy is scheduled to appear in Danbury Juvenile Court on the charges. Police did not disclose his identity.

Obtuse Road

Motorist Kathryn Rowe, 22, of Brookfield was driving a 2001 Subaru Outback station wagon northward on Obtuse Road about 11:47 am on August 9, when she was distracted by a cellphone, after which the Subaru went off the right side of the road, police said.

Rowe was not injured. Hawleyville volunteer firefighters and Newtown Volunteer Ambulance Corps responded to the accident.

Police said they issued Rowe a written warning regarding the cellphone.

Sideswipe Crash

At about 2:52 pm on August 6, a sideswipe accident occurred on eastbound Interstate 84 involving Gerard Turner, 53, of Durham, who was driving a 2015 Cadillac SRX-4 SUV, and motorist Brian Spatafora, 61, of Portland, Maine, who was driving a 2014 Chevrolet vehicle, state police said.

There were no injuries. Fault for the collision could not be determined, state police said.

Lightpost

Kevin Carriere, 34, of Sebago, Maine, was driving a 2008 Ford F-150 pickup truck on the Exit 11 off-ramp for Interstate 84 at about 7:10 am on August 4, when the vehicle fishtailed on a sharp curve on the ramp and then went off the roadway, striking a lightpost on the right road shoulder, state police said.

There were no injuries. State police said they issued Carriere a written warning for traveling too fast for conditions.

Money Found

Police report that an unspecified amount of cash was found in the parking lot at Newtown Shopping Village at 6 Queen Street about 4:30 pm on August 10.

Anyone who believes they may have lost any money there may contact police Officer Scott Smith at 203-426-5841, police said.

Botsford Crash

At about 8 pm on July 30, motorist Michael Berko, 18, of 65 Charter Ridge, who was driving a 2014 Ford Focus sedan northward on South Main Street, stopped and was waiting at a traffic signal near Sand Hill Plaza, when the Focus was struck from behind by northbound motorist Jessica Hageman, 41, of Ansonia, who was diving a 2011 Ford Fusion sedan, police aid.

There were no injuries. Police said they gave Hageman a written warning for following too closely.

Chain Reaction

At about 6:36 pm on July 3, eastbound motorist Carolyn Figliola, 21, of Weston, who was driving a 2001 Saab 9/5 sedan, stopped for traffic conditions near 42 Church Hill Road, after which eastbound motorist Griffin Pfalzgraf, 29, of Monroe, who was driving a 2014 Toyota RAV-4 SUV, stopped behind the Saab, police said.

Eastbound motorist Justin Tomasino, 44, of 45 Charter Ridge, who was driving a 2007 Volvo S-60 sedan, then struck the rear end of Toyota, pushing the Toyota into the rear end of the Saab, police said.

There were no injuries. Police said they issued Tomasino an infraction for failure to drive a reasonable distance apart and for driving an unregistered vehicle.

Tools Taken

Sometime between August 5 and August 9, someone stole a portable electrical generator and various tools from a construction site at St Rose Cemetery at 20 Cherry Street, police said, Police ask anyone with knowledge of the incident to contact them at 203 426-5841 concerning Case 2015-17402.

This compact car received heavy front-end damage in a two-vehicle accident that occurred on South Main Street near its southern intersection with Elm Drive at about 11:25 am on August 6. Police said motorist Megan Chervansky, 29, of Sherman was driving a 2004 Acura TSX sedan southward on South Main Street and then slowed in preparing to make a left turn into a driveway at 79 South Main Street, when the Acura was struck from behind by southbound motorist Blake McCoy, 26, of Bridgeport, who was driving a 2010 Toyota Corolla sedan. Both drivers reported pain as a result of the impact, police said. The Acura was carrying a 2½-year-old child as a passenger, according to police. The Newtown Volunteer Ambulance Corps and Newtown Hook & Ladder volunteer firefighters responded to the accident. Police said they issued McCoy an infraction for failure to drive a reasonable distance apart and for driving without a license.
