John E. Gearin

John E. Gearin, 92, formerly of Norwalk and Newtown, died August 12, in New Milford, after a brief illness. He was born December 20, 1920, in Norwalk, son of Eunice (Williams) and John Gearin.

“Jack” was a notable athlete and played for the famous 1939 Norwalk High School football team. He served aboard the submarine USS Cochino during World War II. He married Mildred Carusone in 1940. They were married for 62 years in a love affair that began on the dance floors of the Big Bands of the 1930s and never ended, even with her passing in 2002. They raised their children in Norwalk and Newtown before retiring to New Milford.

He was employed as a design engineer by Sikorsky and later Perkin Elmer.

He never lost his Irish charm. His was a lifelong example of independence, integrity, responsibility, and honor.

He is survived by his children Pam Fagan, Jack Gearin, Nora Bardo, and Dan Gearin; 11 grandchildren; and 13 great-grandchildren. In addition to his wife, his son Patrick and youngest daughter, Melissa, predeceased him.

A funeral service will take place Friday, August 16, at 11 am, at the Lillis Funeral Home, 58 Bridge Street, New Milford. Internment will follow in Center Cemetery in New Milford. Calling hours will be held Friday, August 16, from 10 to 11 am, at the funeral home.
